dry firing - is the practice of "firing" a gun without ammunition. Dry firing
occurs when a magazine has been emptied or bb's are no longer shooting through
the barrel. An airsoft gun should not be dry fired more than a few seconds at a time
or there is an increased risk doing damage to the gun's internals. (

engagement range - [minimum] distance or range that must exist between
a player's gun and target, before the player may 'engage' or fire upon
the target, as set by an event or organization, in order to ensure the safety
of the players. Breaking engagement range limits often results in disciplinary
action including removal from an event.

|
feet per second (fps) - as measured in U.S. units, feet traveled
over the time period of one second. FPS pertains specifically to the speed
at which a bb is fired from the barrel of a gun and measured by a
chronograph. Airsoft events and organizations typically have limits placed
on the maximum fps allowed for an airsoft gun.

|
fire (modes of) - a mode of fire is the number of bbs an airsoft gun
is set to fire with a single pull/squeeze of the trigger.
- safe (or safety) - zero bbs where trigger is often locked or disabled
- semi-auto (or single-shot) - one bb
- burst - 2 - 3 bb's
- full-auto (or fully-automatic) - 4+ bb's where the number depends
on how many bb's are loaded and how long the trigger is held on.

friendly fire - or non-hostile fire, a term originally adopted
by the United States military, is fire from allied or friendly forces,
as opposed to fire coming from enemy forces or enemy fire. (

hit - When a player is hit by a bb fired by the opposing
team or their own teammates (friendly fire) - they are now 'hit'
and must call out their death, usually by saying "hit" loud
enough for all in the vicinity to hear. At this time, the player
must follow the rules set by the event or organization. Typical
rules state you are out of action and prohibited from moving or
firing your weapon until the game is over or respawn rules
have been satisfied. (

device, such as a handgun or other weapon, cellular telephone,
hand tool, or other small object about the person, most commonly
in a location where it can be easily withdrawn for immediate use. (

hop-up - describes the back-spin put on airsoft BB's to
increase their range and (vertical) accuracy. Hop-up acts somewhat
like the rifling on the barrel of a firearm, but without the increase
in horizontal accuracy. A hop-up as referred to on an airsoft gun is
the device that adjusts the pressure force exerted on the bb to
create the back-spin. (
